Dhani Harrison Biography
Dhani Harrison was born on August 1, 1978, at HRH Princess Christian’s Hospital in Windsor, Berkshire. He got his name from the sixth and seventh notes of the Indian music scale, DHA and NI. His mom, Olivia Harrison, is an American with Mexican heritage and works in the entertainment industry as an author and film producer.
He grew up with his parents in Henley-on-Thames Estate, at Friar Park, where his father lived since 1970. The house is a vibrant and quirky mix of French Flamboyant Gothic style, using brick, stone, and terracotta. It includes towers, pinnacles, and large tracery windows.
The grounds, developed over two decades, are equally diverse, featuring various gardens inspired by exotic, historical, or literary themes.
He went to Dolphin School and Badgemore Primary School, then later attended Shiplake College, where he was part of the Combined Cadet Force and developed a passion for rowing.
He finished his education at Brown University, earning a bachelor’s degree in industrial design and physics. After working as a car designer at McLaren Automotive, he decided to follow in his father’s musical footsteps.
One of his earliest memories, at age six, is getting a drumming lesson from his father’s friend and bandmate, “Uncle” Ringo Starr.
Before that, he assisted his father in home recording sessions, gaining valuable experience in performing and production techniques, which later contributed to the Brainwashed album project.
Dhani Harrison Career
Dhani Harrison didn’t start his music career until later in life, transitioning from the automotive industry after his father, George Harrison, passed away in November 2001.
Initially, he helped complete his dad’s posthumous album “Brainwashed” and formed the band thenewno2 with Oliver Hecks. Dhani toured and recorded with them into the 2010s, gradually venturing into film and TV scoring.
In 2004, Harrison joined Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, Prince, and others to perform “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during his father’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
In March 2006, he appeared on Liam Lynch’s Podcast Video Variety Show, Lynchland, performing a duet set to feature on a Lynch album.
Harrison collaborated with Jakob Dylan on John Lennon’s “Gimme Some Truth” for the tribute album Instant Karma. The song was for an amnesty campaign themed ‘Save Darfur’ and was released on June 12, 2007.
His band, thenewno2, began recording in April 2006, with Harrison on lead guitar, synthesizer, and vocals and Oli Hecks on drums and synths.
Harrison also contributed to a reworking of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” titled “The Heart Gently Weeps,” featured as the first single on the Wu-Tang Clan’s album called 8 Diagrams. It was released in December 2007.
His first solo album, “IN///PARALLEL,” came out in 2017, but he kept composing for the screen. Born on August 1, 1978, Dhani is George Harrison’s only son, raised in a musical environment at Friar Park.
After studying industrial design at Brown University, he worked at McLaren Automotive until 2001. Completing “Brainwashed” was his first major musical project, and he continued collaborating on various projects, including forming thenewno2.
He explored film composition, working on projects like “Beautiful Creatures” and TV series like “Good Girls Revolt.”
In 2017, Dhani released his solo debut, and in 2023, he launched his second album, “Innerstanding,” showcasing his cinematic skills with guest appearances by Graham Coxon, Mereki, and Liela Moss.
