Alex Antetokounmpo Biography
Alexandros Emeka Antetokounmpo was born in a neighborhood called Sepolia in Athens, Greece on August 27, 2001. His parents, Veronica and Charles, are from Nigeria. He has a Nigerian passport, which he got in June 2013 so that he could visit the United States legally.
In September 2021, he also became a Greek citizen, just like his mom. He started playing basketball when he was nine years old. When he was in the sixth grade, his family moved to Milwaukee because his older brother Giannis was playing basketball there for the Wisconsin Herd in the NBA G League.
Antetokounmpo went to St. Monica School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, but when he first got there, he didn’t speak English. So, he had to learn the language as he settled into his new home.
Alex Antetokounmpo Basketball Career
In high school, Antetokounmpo played basketball for Dominican High School. He started as a freshman, scoring about 2.9 points per game. But he had a growth spurt, and by the time he was a sophomore, he was 6 feet 8 inches tall!
As a senior, he was really good, averaging 20 points and seven rebounds per game. He even got scholarship offers from some colleges like DePaul, Ohio, and Green Bay.
But instead of going to college, he decided to play in Europe after he finished high school. He was a pretty good player and was considered a three-star recruit by the big recruiting services.
UCAM Murcia (2020–2021): In June 2020, Antetokounmpo signed a three-year contract with UCAM Murcia in Spain. He made his first appearance in October, playing for the reserve team. In that game, he scored 28 points, grabbed six rebounds, and made some impressive three-point shots in a big win.
Raptors 905 (2021–2022): Even though he wasn’t picked in the 2021 NBA draft, he didn’t give up. He joined the Sacramento Kings for the 2021 NBA Summer League, and his team ended up winning the whole thing. Later, he got a chance with the Toronto Raptors, but he played for their affiliate team, the Raptors 905.
Wisconsin Herd (2022–present): In November 2022, he got a spot on the opening night roster for the Wisconsin Herd in the NBA G League.
Milwaukee Bucks (2023): He signed with the Milwaukee Bucks in September 2023 but was released on the same day. However, in October 2023, he was announced as part of the Herd’s training camp roster for the 2023-24 season. So, his basketball journey is full of ups and downs, but he is not giving up on his dream.
Personal Life
In September 2021, Alex and his mom were given a special honor by the Prime Minister of Greece. They were made honorary Greek citizens.
Also, Alex and his three older brothers, Giannis, Thanasis, and Kostas, along with a hockey player named Filip Forsberg, became part of the group that owns the Nashville SC soccer team in the MLS.
