Chris Manhertz career
After finishing college, Chris Manhertz, who had no prior football experience except for playing Madden NFL, decided to switch to football. His basketball coach got a call from a scout during his senior season, and that led to a pivot in his career.
At first, he thought it was a joke as he had no prior football experience. He trained hard to make a career in professional football.
The Buffalo Bills gave him a tryout and signed him to a future/reserve contract in May 2015, even though coach Rex Ryan thought his chances of making the roster were slim. Unfortunately, he didn’t make the Bills’ preseason roster.
After being released by the Bills, Manhertz joined the New Orleans Saints and spent a season on their practice squad.
He later made it to the Saints’ active roster for the beginning of the 2016 season, marking his NFL debut on September 18, 2016. However, he was released on October 16, 2016.
After being picked up from waivers by the Carolina Panthers on October 17, 2016, Manhertz played in 16 games in 2017, starting four of them.
He filled in for the injured Greg Olsen and made two catches for 17 yards. Unfortunately, he suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 17 and was placed on injured reserve.
In Week 15 of the 2018 season, Manhertz scored his first career touchdown with a trick-play 50-yard pass from running back Christian McCaffrey.
On January 29, 2019, Manhertz signed a two-year contract extension with the Panthers and was named the starter for the 2020 season.
On March 17, 2021, Manhertz signed a two-year deal worth $6.65 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In a Week 1 game against the Houston Texans, he caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence, marking Lawrence’s first career touchdown pass.
On March 15, 2023, Chris Manhertz signed a two-year contract with the Denver Broncos.
