Eberts convinced Illinois author Jeff Elliott to wire him over $600,000 with the promise of adapting his book into a movie about a boy’s recovery from a brain tumor. However, Eberts only used a small portion for film expenses, approximately $61,000, and allegedly diverted the rest to fund his extravagant lifestyle.
When Elliott discovered the scam, he sued Eberts and won $1 million. Eberts paid $400,000, and Elliott forgave the rest. But then, Eberts got in more trouble. He tried to get $250,000 from an undercover FBI agent for a fake business deal. He also faced money laundering charges and wire fraud related to the money he got from Elliott.
