Giannis Antetokounmpo Early Life
Giannis Adetokunbo, whose full name is Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo, was born in Athens, Greece, to parents from Nigeria. His dad used to play soccer, and his mom was good at high jumping. They moved from Lagos to Greece, leaving their oldest son with his grandparents.
Giannis grew up in a neighborhood in Athens where many Nigerian families lived. But life wasn’t easy for his parents because they didn’t have the right paperwork to work in Greece. So, to help out, Giannis and his big brother Thanasis sold things like watches and handbags on the streets.
Even though Giannis was born in Greece, he couldn’t automatically become a Greek citizen because of the country’s rules.
This made him feel like he didn’t quite belong to either the Greek or Nigerian communities in Athens. He also couldn’t travel outside Greece or get official papers for long. But in 2013, just before the NBA draft, he finally got Greek citizenship.
His new Greek citizenship changed his last name to Antetokounmpo, a Greek way of writing Adetokunbo. Because many people found his last name hard to pronounce, they started calling him the “Greek Freak.”
Giannis also holds Nigerian citizenship, and he got his Nigerian passport in 2015, so he’s both Greek and Nigerian. He’s proud of both parts of his heritage and considers himself a bit of both.
