Biography
Heidi Gayle Farrell was born in Laguna Beach, California, on August 29, 1959. She is the daughter of James Moies Farrell and Glenetta Betty Farrell, the latter being an English teacher who passed away in 2015.
Heidi dedicatedly pursued her education, earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Vanguard University. Furthermore, she attained a PhD in systematic theology from King’s College London in 1995.
Heidi’s transformative journey toward Christianity began when she heard a message from a Navajo preacher while volunteering on a Choctaw reservation.
Ministry
Heidi Baker began her ministry journey in 1979 when she met Rolland Baker, the grandson of missionary H. A. Baker. They married six months later in 1980, and soon left for missions. In 1980, they founded Iris Global, a non-profit Christian ministry. They aimed to help people and share the Christian message, especially in developing nations.
In 1995, Heidi and Rolland moved to Mozambique to start a new ministry, focusing on caring for orphaned and abandoned children. Iris Global took on a former government orphanage near Maputo, caring for around 80 children.
Heidi felt called to mission work at age sixteen while living on an Indian reservation in Mississippi. After encountering Jesus through a Navajo evangelist, she had a vision where Jesus urged her to be a minister and missionary to Asia, England, and Africa. Following this calling, Heidi and Rolland founded Iris Global to revive and support the forgotten and impoverished.
Since then, they’ve worked in various places. In 1995, they answered a call to Mozambique. They initially focused on helping abandoned street children, and as the Holy Spirit worked miraculously, a revival movement spread across Mozambique.
Due to her philanthropic works in Mozambique, Heidi is now called Mama Heidi by many children under her care.
She oversees a ministry that includes Bible schools, medical clinics, church-based orphan care, well drilling, primary schools, and outreach events.
