John Wick: Chapter 4 dominates as the highest-grossing entry at $447 million worldwide, marking an extraordinary 420% increase from the original 2014 film’s modest $86 million take.
The franchise has achieved something rare in Hollywood: each theatrical sequel significantly outperformed its predecessor, building a $1.026 billion empire from a project that nearly went straight to video.
This consistent growth pattern, combined with Keanu Reeves’ physical dedication and directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch’s revolutionary “gun fu” choreography, transformed what sceptics dismissed as a disposable B-movie into the defining action franchise of the 2010s-2020s era.
The 2025 spinoff Ballerina, however, signals potential challenges for the universe without Reeves at the centre, earning $137 million against a $90 million budget and falling short of expectations.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)

John Wick: Chapter 4 claimed the throne in March 2023 with $447,142,521 worldwide ($187.1 million domestic, $260 million international), nearly $120 million more than Chapter 3’s previous record. The film opened to $73.8 million domestically from 3,855 theatres, with an additional $64 million from 71 international markets, creating a massive $137.5 million global debut that dethroned Avengers: Endgame from the #1 spot after its three-week reign.
Chapter 4’s success pushed the entire franchise past the billion-dollar milestone in May 2023, achieving what Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Joe Drake called “an anomaly” and “astonishing.” The film earned 4.47 times its $100 million production budget, maintaining the franchise’s consistent profitability pattern of 4x+ multipliers across all entries.
Critics awarded it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (the highest franchise score) and audiences gave it an A CinemaScore, with many calling it one of the greatest action films of the decade and comparing it favourably to Mad Max: Fury Road.
The 169-minute epic became the second-highest live-action opening for Keanu Reeves (behind only The Matrix Reloaded) and represented the best opening for Lionsgate post-COVID. Despite its nearly three-hour runtime, the film maintained strong theatrical legs, running for 83 days from March through June 2023.
Top international markets included the UK ($21.1 million), Germany ($20.7 million), and Australia ($16.6 million). The production featured the final posthumous performance of Lance Reddick as Charon, adding poignant significance to the film’s critical and commercial triumph.
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019)

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum elevated the franchise to true blockbuster territory in May 2019, earning $327.7 million worldwide ($171 million domestic, $156.7 million international). The film opened to $57 million domestically and $92.2 million globally, nearly doubling Chapter 2’s opening and becoming the first film to dethrone Avengers: Endgame from the top spot after its three-week reign.
Parabellum made more in its opening weekend than the original John Wick’s entire domestic run, a stunning testament to the franchise’s explosive growth. The film earned 89% on Rotten Tomatoes (both critics and audience) and received an A- CinemaScore, with critics praising its “brilliantly choreographed, over-the-top action.”
Produced for $75 million with $48 million in marketing expenses, the film generated an estimated $89 million net profit, according to Deadline Hollywood’s 2019 Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament.
The subtitle “Parabellum”—from the Latin phrase “Si vis pacem, para bellum” (If you want peace, prepare for war)—perfectly captured the film’s stakes as John Wick faced a $14 million bounty and excommunicado status.
The May release strategy, shifting from Chapter 2’s February slot, proved brilliant counterprogramming against Disney tentpoles. Halle Berry joined as Sofia, marking a major cast expansion alongside Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, and Anjelica Huston. The film opened in all 66 international markets stronger than previous instalments and set up Chapter 4’s even bigger success.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)

John Wick: Chapter 2 proved the original wasn’t a fluke, earning $174,348,632 worldwide in February 2017 ($92 million domestic, $82.3 million international). The sequel opened to $30.4 million domestically, more than doubling the first film’s $14.4 million debut, and earned its entire opening weekend amount in just nine days, which the original took months to accumulate.
With a $40 million production budget, Chapter 2 achieved spectacular profitability at 4.35 times budget, continuing the franchise’s consistent financial success pattern. Critics awarded it 89% on Rotten Tomatoes (up from 86%) with an A- CinemaScore (improved from the original’s B). The film surpassed pre-release projections of $20 million by 50%, proving the franchise had built substantial audience goodwill.
Chapter 2 significantly expanded the John Wick universe, taking the action to Rome and introducing the High Table, as well as more profound lore about the Continental Hotel and the global reach of the assassin underworld.
The film featured the first on-screen reunion of Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne since The Matrix trilogy, with Fishburne playing the Bowery King. Italian crime lord Santino D’Antonio’s blood oath “marker” compelled Wick back into action, ultimately leading to his excommunicado status after killing Santino on Continental grounds.
A direct setup for Chapter 3’s hunted assassin premise.
The film became the top-selling packaged media release of 2017, generating $29.2 million from 1.67 million combined DVD/Blu-ray units and establishing John Wick as a rare franchise where each instalment performs better critically and commercially.
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (2025)

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina opened June 6, 2025, earning $137.2 million worldwide ($58.1 million domestic, $79.1 million international) against a $90 million production budget. The Ana de Armas-led spinoff opened to $24.5 million domestically from 3,409 theatres, falling short of $28-30 million pre-release projections and finishing #2 behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake.
Despite positive audience reception (93% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and A- CinemaScore), Ballerina underperformed financially, falling well below its estimated $225 million break-even point. The film received 76% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with consensus praising Ana de Armas’ “steely” performance and “creatively brutal action choreography,” though some felt it “lacked substantive mythology of its own.” The film earned a modest 6.9/10 on IMDb, the lowest rating for the franchise.
Taking place between Chapters 3 and 4, Ballerina follows Eve Macarro (de Armas), a Ruska Roma ballerina-assassin seeking revenge for her father’s murder by The Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne), leader of a dangerous Cult. Keanu Reeves appears in a supporting role, with Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, and Lance Reddick (in his final posthumous screen appearance) reprising their roles. Director Len Wiseman helmed the project from a script by Shay Hatten, with Chad Stahelski overseeing extensive reshoots in February 2024 that reportedly added months of additional photography.
The film’s underperformance, grossing less than half of Chapter 4’s box office despite a similar critical reception, suggests that audiences are primarily drawn to Keanu Reeves as the central star rather than the universe itself.
Released digitally July 1, 2025, just one month after its theatrical debut, Ballerina has nonetheless spawned sequel discussions, with producers confirming plans for Ballerina 2 and director Wiseman discussing “consequences of her actions” storylines.
John Wick (2014)

John Wick opened on October 24, 2014, to low expectations and modest numbers, earning just $86,085,191 worldwide ($43 million domestic, $43 million international) from a budget of $20-30 million. The film opened to $14.4 million from 2,589 theatres, finishing second behind the horror film Ouija. Yet, this “surprise” performance nearly doubled pre-release estimates of $7-10 million and launched what would become a billion-dollar franchise.
The debut film earned an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (critics) and 81% (audience) with an IMDb rating of 7.5/10, establishing the franchise’s critical credibility from the outset.
Despite a modest opening, the film maintained a strong theatre presence until January 22, 2015.
Producer Basil Iwanyk nearly cancelled production five days before filming due to financing issues, proceeding only to avoid bankruptcy from potential lawsuits. Keanu Reeves invested his own money in production to ensure its completion, while actress Eva Longoria emerged as a significant financial backer when the production faced financial shortfalls.
The simple revenge plot, retired hitman John Wick seeks vengeance after Russian gangsters steal his 1969 Boss 429 Mustang and kill his puppy Daisy (a final gift from his deceased wife), resonated emotionally despite studio executives’ worries that killing a dog would alienate audiences. Instead, critics hailed it as “stylish, thrilling, and giddily kinetic” and “a satisfying return to action for Keanu Reeves.”
The film introduced the intricate criminal underworld, with its own rules, rituals, and economy, centred around the Continental Hotel, gold coins, and the legendary assassin known as “Baba Yaga” (the Boogeyman).
Budget constraints actually benefited the film, forcing directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch to use single-camera setups and long takes instead of elaborate coverage, inadvertently creating the franchise’s distinctive visual style.
Originally titled “Scorn,” the name change to “John Wick” occurred late in production after Reeves kept referring to it by the character name in interviews, reportedly creating an estimated “$7 million in free press.” The film generated additional revenue through home video, with $20 million in digital downloads and $44 million in physical media sales by 2022, transforming from a modest theatrical performer to a streaming sensation.
The John Wick franchise has sold over 51.8 million tickets in North America alone, transforming from a project that distributors nearly sent straight to video into what Rolling Stone dubbed “The Last Great American Action-Movie Franchise.”
Yet the franchise continues expanding. John Wick: Chapter 5 remains in development with Reeves returning despite his character’s apparent death. A Caine spinoff featuring Donnie Yen’s blind assassin is expected to start production. An animated prequel exploring John’s origin story has Reeves attached for voiceover work. These projects test whether the universe can sustain itself beyond the core Wick narrative.
The franchise’s cultural penetration extends beyond the box office. John Wick became a playable Fortnite character in 2019. “Baba Yaga” entered the popular lexicon. The Continental hotel aesthetic became aspirational. Rescue dog adoptions reportedly spiked after each film. Brazilian jiu-jitsu and tactical shooting courses saw enrollment increases. Three-piece suits experienced a renaissance. Quotes like “Yeah,” “A pencil,” and “excommunicado” became internet memes.
