Liv Tyler shared an interesting throwback pic on Instagram that took fans back to when she and Ben Affleck were in the movie “Armageddon,” where the world was facing a giant asteroid.
In the cute photo, Liv and Ben were on the sci-fi thriller set. Liv captioned it, “Ohhh, Monday.” She looks like she’s cool with Ben pretending to take a bite out of her head while holding onto his dirty white tank top.
Back then, Ben only had a not-so-great barbed wire tattoo on his right arm, not the kind of not-so-great back tattoo he has now. Good memories!
Below are the details about the movies Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler have featured in and the role they played.
Armageddon (1998)
Armageddon is a movie from 1998 that revolves around a catastrophic space disaster. Directed by Michael Bay and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the movie was released by Touchstone Pictures. The plot follows a group of ordinary workers who are tasked with drilling deep into the earth’s surface to stop a massive asteroid that is heading towards Earth. The mission is initiated by NASA to save the planet from destruction.
The main actors include Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Will Patton, Steve Buscemi, William Fichtner, Owen Wilson, Michael Clarke Duncan, Keith David, and Peter Stormare.
Film Plot
A huge meteor shower wrecks the space shuttle and smashes into cities like New York, Boston, and more. NASA finds out a Texas-sized asteroid will hit Earth in 18 days, maybe ending everything. They plan to drill a deep hole in the asteroid and blow it up with a nuke.
Harry Stamper, an expert oil driller, and his crew get picked for the job. They train to be astronauts and head to the asteroid in shuttles named Freedom and Independence. Independence crashes, but Harry’s team tries to save them. When drilling takes too long, things get tense, and they might not make it before the asteroid hits.
The President decides to blow up the bomb from Earth, but Harry and the team want to do it right. They face challenges, like a gas explosion, and some think the mission is doomed. A.J., one of Harry’s crew, steps up to finish the drilling. But someone has to stay behind to blow up the bomb manually.
Harry picks up A.J., disconnects his air hose, and sends him to the shuttle. A.J. finishes the job, but Harry loses his grip on the detonator. Just before the deadline, Harry blows up the bomb and saves the day. Everyone lands safely, A.J. and his girl Grace reunite, and Harry’s sacrifice is remembered at A.J. and Grace’s wedding.
Liv Tylers’s Role
Liv Tyler’s role was that of Grace Stamper, the strong and emotional woman in love with A. J. Frost (Ben Affleck). She had to watch the two men she loved and cared about, her boyfriend ( A. J. Frost) and her father (Harry S. Stamper), go off to space to help the Earth survive a meteor, even as one of them chose not to return but to stay and finish the mission.
Liv’s real dad, Steven Tyler, was one of the people who produced some of the film’s major soundtracks.
Ben Affleck’s Role
Ben played the role of A. J. Frost, Liv’s boyfriend, and lover against the approval of Liv’s father in the movie. He went to save Earth with Liv’s father, Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis).
How Much Did the Film Make?
The movie did well, making $553 million worldwide, even though it cost $140 million. It was the top-grossing film in 1998 and the highest-grossing one from Touchstone Pictures. But not everyone loved it – some critics had mixed feelings about it.
Jersey Girl (2004)
Kevin Smith wrote, co-edited, and directed the 2004 American comedy-drama, Jersey Girl. It stars Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler, George Carlin (in his final film appearance before his death), Stephen Root, Mike Starr, Raquel Castro, Jason Biggs, and Jennifer Lopez.
The story revolves around a widowed guy who is left to care for his precocious daughter after her mother dies during childbirth.
It was Smith’s first picture that was not set in the View Askewniverse and did not feature cameos by Jay and Silent Bob; however, animated pictures of the actors appear in the View Askew logo at the opening of the film and a still version at the end.
Plot
Ollie Trinké, played by Ben Affleck, is a big-shot media guy in New York City. Sadly, his wife Gertrude, played by Jennifer Lopez, died while she was giving birth to their daughter, Gertie, in 1994.
Ollie can’t handle the sadness, so he focuses on work and ignores little Gertie. His dad helps out, but Ollie messes up at work, loses his job, and has to move in with his dad in New Jersey.
Seven years later, in 2001, Gertie is in school, and Ollie is trying to get his life back on track. They meet Maya, played by Liv Tyler, who becomes a friend. Ollie, now working a different job, realizes he misses his old work in public relations. He gets a shot at a good job back in New York, but it causes problems with Gertie and Maya.
Things get tense when Ollie messes up with Gertie, saying hurtful things. Eventually, they makeup, but Ollie faces a tough choice between his career and being a good dad.
He runs into Will Smith, the actor he trashed in the past, and they have a chat. Ollie rushes to Gertie’s school show just in time.
The movie ends with Ollie choosing to stay in New Jersey for Gertie. He realizes being her dad is the most important thing, even though he thought he wanted his old job back.
They all celebrate at a bar, and it seems like Maya and Ollie might have some feelings for each other. But in the end, Ollie is happy with his new life as a dad.
Liv Tyler’s Role
Live played Maya Harding, a college graduate student who works at the video store, Ollie’s new girlfriend and mother figure to Gertie.
Ben Affleck’s Role
He played Oliver “Ollie” Trinké, the single father of Gertie, who lost his wife shortly after her birth.
How Much Did the Film Make?
Despite a $35 million budget and a $15 million marketing campaign, “Jersey Girl” grossed $25.2 million in North American domestic box office and $10.8 million worldwide. The budget for the picture included $10 million for Affleck and $4 million for Lopez.
How Was Their Relationship in Both Films?
During an interview with Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck on One Night At McCool, aired on Cinema, Liv Tyler said Ben treated her like a little sister in the Armageddon film because they had known each other for a long time, even before becoming Hollywood stars. Liv Tyler said they were aware of each other’s personal lives, which made Ben feel awkward about kissing her on-screen.
Ben Affleck even advised Liv Tyler to cover up. With such a tight friendship, Tyler stated that her kiss with Affleck made both of them laugh on set. Not only that, but Affleck acted like a genuine brother by poking her to conceal herself.
So all in all, they have a good relationship, as they are very good friends, and are still friends till today.
