Who is Zharnel Hughes?
Zharnel Hughes is a renowned Anguilla-born British Olympic athlete. He came third at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest on Sunday, August 20, 2023. He was outrun by American Noah Lyles and Botswana’s Letsille Tebogo. Noah Lyles won the race going home with the gold medal.
Zharnel Hughes was born on 13 July 1995 to middle-class parents. His mother worked as a housekeeper, and his father provided for the family while working as a taxi driver.
He was born into a family with a background in sprinting, so his passion for running began in his early days in primary school. At age ten, he was already winning races in his primary school, Stoney Ground Primary School (now Orealia Kelly Primary School).
At fourteen, he ran his international debut for his home country in Anguilla at the 2010 CARIFTA Games. Although he came eighth in the 100 meters final, Zharnel did not back down.
Two years later, he won a scholarship to attend IAAF’s Regional High-Performance Training Centre in Jamaica, where his mother comes from.
He seized the opportunity to learn under the tutelage of the one-time fastest-man-alive record holder, Usain Bolt. At the same time, he attended Kingston College, an all-male secondary school in Kingston, Jamaica.
In June 2015, he represented Great Britain in all World Athletics events, and according to him, it has always been his dream to represent Team GB.
Although his coming onboard to Team GB as an Anguillan raised concerns over funding as the International Olympic Committee did not recognize Anguilla, he had the support of British sprinters Darren Campbell and Daniel Caines.
Since his first international race, Zharnel’s track record spans several international races, setting new records and winning titles, including World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, where he came 3rd.

Zharnel Hughes is currently in a romantic affair with Shenel Francis, a Dental Hygienist. Their relationship began in September 2022 after Zharnel participated in the 2022 European Championships in Munich.

Zharnel’s girlfriend, Shenel, is from Northern Clarendon. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene/Hygienist from the University of Technology, Jamaica, in 2021. According to her LinkedIn, she works at Jam Smiles Dental in Kingston, Jamaica.
Before Shenel, Zharnel Hughes was in a relationship with British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, but they split 2018 right before the 2018 Commonwealth Games. According to Dina, she and Zharnel are fine and they are “still friends.”
Even as Zharnel is running races in international tracks, he is also pursuing matters of the heart with his heartthrob Shenel Francis.
