A lot of damage and name-tainting was brought upon Nigeria after Invictus Obi, Forbes recognized under-30 billionaire was arrested in connection with 12 billion dollars online fraud. And when we thought it was over- boom, FBI makes public the arrest of 80 Nigerian connected to a massive online scam.
Nigerian were quick to assume that Invictus Obi snitched his fellow fraudsters to FBI – Federal Bureau of investigation.
The online fraud by these Nigerians records as the largest in the history of the United States – a record which many Nigerians frown at. Authorities revealed that the fraudsters preyed on the elderly, using romance as the disguise. Fourteen (14) Nigerians have been arrested, while others remain outside the shores of united states beyond FBI reach.
The cause of the increasing rate of online fraud can be traced back to the poverty plaguing Nigeria. It can also be traced to corrupt leaders and poor followership which have set Nigeria’s economy on a constant nose-dive. Younge Nigerians grow up with the “get-rich-quick-mentality” and lack of value fueled by misleading media content promoted by some Nigerian artist – Naira Marley’s case study.
This sad turnout is going to affect every Nigerian one way or the other, what’s our fate.
Immigration processing becomes tougher.
You see all those “wahala” involved in securing a visa, it will triple.
International business partners start losing trust in Nigerians.
Nigerians will be like “I’m not related to Invictus obi, can we move on ?”
It will become more herculean to carry out legit business transactions with new potential foreign client.
